for starting your morning with us. >> much more ahead on "cnn saturday morning." it starts right now. good morning, everyone. i'm randi kaye. >> and i'm victor blackwell. it's 8:00 on the east, 5:00 out west and we're starting this hour with the wrangling on capitol hill over the fiscal cliff. we're just 31 days until the deadline which could potentially trigger $7 trillion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases. both republicans and democrats are at a standoff. they are each blaming the other side for holding up the process, but republican congressman terry lee says that by going over the cliff the president may have an ulterior motive. >> many of us fear that the president's real plan here was to let us go over the cliff and blame the republicans, and that's what we look like we're being set up to do, and then if you go over the cliff, then two months later, a month later, the president can come back with a bill and say, hey, we're going to now since the republicans let everyone's taxes go up, i'm going to ride in here now and be the -- the knight in shining armor and lower the tax

, they tell us that that is something that was very, very, very uncommon. as far as they knew the couple had lived together for about a year, and by all appearances got along great. we spoke with the next door neighbor who did not want us to use his name, said he often spoke with jovan. jovan didn't want to talk about football because the chiefs are undergoing a horrible season. only one win. he was very proud of their daughter 3 months old and that the couple seemed to be getting along very well. over a couple of weeks ago jovan's mother arrived to visit for the holidays, and she was there when that initial tragic shooting happened, randi. >> we also know that before he shot himself, he had some contact with his coaches, and he had a gun on him at the time. do we know what that conversation was about? >> reporter: all we know is that the police say that he was never a threat to the coaches. the coach, the general manager, another member of the chiefs' staff who met him outside the training facility just a short distance from here, they apparently tried to talk him out of harming himself, bu

news is things could have been worse. it doesn't seem to those of us watching from the sidelines as though time is running out, but congress does some of its best or at least its speediest work when the nation's back is against the wall. after a rare oval office meeting with top congressional leaders, the president said he's modestly optimistic a deal can come together. emphasis on "modestly." >> the american people are watching what we do here. obviously, their patience is already thin. this is deja vu all over again. >> reporter: both sides left an agreement, at least over their next step. >> we'll be, would go hard to try to see if we can get there in the next 24 hours. >> whatever we come up with is going to be imperfect. some people aren't going to like it. some will like it less, but that's where we are. >> reporter: on saturday they will try to agree on legislation preventing income tax, providing pay cuts to medicare providers and fixing the alternative tax. the president says an agreement must include an extension of unemployment benefits. republicans called for a measur

with a hate crime. >>> in the top things we learned in 2012, trust us, you will be impressed. >>> good morning. i'm alison kosik in for randi kaye. it's 8:00. thanks for starting your morning with you. we begin this morning in washington, and the focus is on capitol hill as lawmakers try to work out and vote on a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. both houses of congress are meeting in a rather sunday session. the senate convenes aat 1:00 eastern and the house at 2:00. our chief white house correspondent jessica yellen with the look at the chances for a deal and what's on the table. >> here in washington there is still hope a deal can be cut in time to avert the fiscal cliff. on saturday the president was at work here in the white house, but all eyes were on the senate where negotiators were trading deal points and revenue figures to try to reach an agreement all sides can stomach. the baseline for the president, any bipartisan bill has to extend unemployment insurance that would affect some 2 million americans, and increase taxes for the highest income earners. negotiators can still work out exa
